"The landscapes of East Sussex inspire me to no end. With views of the region from my studio and garden on the verge between the High and Low Wealds, I take constant delight in observing their lush, vibrant colours. Horizons are dotted with forests and farmlands between rolling hills."
This painting depicts a typical Sussex landscape in bright, warm greens, with a white tent nestled at the edge of woodland bordering some open fields.
Since the artist began living in Sussex, the legislative term "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty," often abbreviated as an AONB, has become part of her mental vocabulary in association with the High Weald. No doubt many of the region's longer-term residents can say the same! The designation carries with it an urgency for conservation of the landscape and its history, ecology, and culture. The fascination for how parts of Sussex, Kent and beyond are protected for their distinct characteristics and qualities are evident in Nella's continued exploration of semi-classical English landscapes, and their wonder continues to inspire her work.
